Category 5 network cable is pretty much the most widely deployed type of network cable today. Currently, you’ll be hard pressed to find actual CAT 5 cable as it has been pretty much replaced by CAT 5e [CAT 5 Enhanced]. CAT 5 cable can be used for Phone line use, 10 base-T Networks or 100 base-T Networks (10/100) . CAT 5 cable can also be used for Gigabit networking, however quality may vary depending on the age of the cable. CAT 5e is more regularly recognized for support of 1000 base-T networks [ Gigabit Ethernet ].
